Green America’s campaign to encourage backyard gardens has bloomed over the last year, Treehugger reports. These projects, deemed “climate victory gardens,” are not only a way for people to contribute to decreasing fossil fuel emissions caused by the food industry, but gardens also grow people’s connection with nature and act as carbon sinks. Tracked by Green America, the number of registered gardens has jumped from 8,670 in 2021 to 14,632 so far in 2022. A press release from the organization explains that the participation amounts to offsetting the emissions of 39 million miles driven.
